Job Requirements

  • Three years of work experience assisting in the performance of semiskilled or skilled maintenance and repair tasks as helper to a journey level employee, helper to a maintenance generalist, or helper in at least one major trade
  • possession of a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL driver's license including any special endorsements as required for vehicle operation
  • ability to interpret plans and specifications
  • physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • ability to make rough time and material estimates
  • ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • good knowledge of tools, materials, methods and safety precautions

Job Qualifications

  • All candidates must be reachable on the current Onondaga County Civil Service eligibility list for this title or be currently working in this title to be considered
  • successful completion of a fingerprint-based background check
  • encouraged residency in the city

Job Duties

  • Repairs doors, window sash, storm windows, screens, window guards, locks and other door hardware, stairs, and railings
  • builds forms for concrete work
  • erects and moves partitions
  • assists in cutting, fitting, assembling and erecting wooden objects and structures
  • makes repairs to wood fixtures, ramps, ladders and frames
  • repairs wood, plastic and metal furniture such as office chairs, wheelchairs, desks, cabinets, bookcases and modifies furniture by adding bumpers, padding or special protective devices to meet special needs of user
  • performs less complex plumbing tasks including cutting, fitting and threading pipe, removing existing pipes and fixtures, repairing and adjusting water mixers, thermostats and other fixtures, locating and unplugging stoppages, repairing leaks in steam lines and overhauling vacuum pumps
  • operates and performs routine maintenance on heating and hot water equipment
  • points up brick and stone work
  • patches plaster walls, sets tile, lays brick or stone on a repair basis, replaces firebrick
  • assists in repair and overhaul of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment
  • overhauls locks and door checks, makes keys, installs locks and other door and window hardware, changes combinations on pin tumbler locks
  • hand mixes plaster or cement and finishes concrete work
  • does interior and exterior painting
  • performs routine electrical trade tasks including repairing electrical equipment, general wiring, installing outlets and switches
  • repairs and rebuilds metal, slate, shingle and built-up roofs
  • installs hinges, shelf brackets, door handles and other hardware fixtures
  • installs carpets, carpet tiles and drapes
  • cuts glass and replaces broken panes
  • repairs broken appliances not requiring major overhaul
  • loads and unloads materials
  • may operate shop machinery
  • maintains simple records related to maintenance
  • performs mechanical tasks such as drilling, tapping, threading, cutting and grinding
  • operates motor vehicles and power-driven equipment
  • performs building cleaning and groundskeeping work such as snow removal, sanding and salting
  • performs athletic field maintenance such as line striping and fence repair
  • performs routine preventive maintenance on heating, ventilating and hot water equipment
  • replaces parts such as belts, sheaves, grease fittings, filters and pumps on HVAC equipment
