Job Requirements

  • possession of a Class B learner's permit at date of hire
  • valid Class B California driver's license with air brakes endorsement within six months of hire
  • ability to lift or carry 50 pounds unaided and up to 100 pounds with assistance
  • ability to work overtime, off-hours shifts, and on-call duty as needed
  • willing to work in outdoor conditions with exposure to weather, traffic, noise, and hazardous substances
  • ability to enter confined spaces and work underground or in trenches
  • sign written authorization for release of DOT regulated substance and alcohol testing records

Job Qualifications

  • basic knowledge of maintenance, construction, and repair methods related to assignment
  • ability to learn and follow proper work methods and safety regulations
  • basic use and minor maintenance of commonly used hand and power tools
  • ability to drive city vehicles safely
  • communicate clearly both orally and in writing
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful manner

Job Duties

  • perform routine manual work in maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, signs, sewers, storm drains, and related structures
  • operate and maintain a variety of construction and maintenance equipment, light and heavy trucks, and power tools
  • perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment
  • fuel and lubricate vehicles and related equipment
  • paint traffic control markings and stencils on pavements and curbs
  • install, repair, and replace street signs and posts
  • remove graffiti from city property
