Job Requirements
- Must possess a valid drivers license with no pattern of moving violations or accidents
- Must possess or be able to obtain a current DOT physical card
- Must pass a company road test
- Six months of verifiable straight truck driving experience preferred or 3 weeks (15 days) of local training required
- Must meet Federal requirement of being 19 years of age or older
- Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance, and hazardous materials transportation
- Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English sufficiently
- Must be able to complete required paperwork and communicate via mobile communication systems
- Must have a desire to serve customers and support the Ward team
- Must meet company’s minimum qualified drivers requirements
- Must be able to work required hours
- Must wear steel-toed shoes/boots
- Must have a pleasing personality and cooperative attitude
- Must participate in random drug testing of all non-CDL employees
- Must be able to accurately read gauges and dials
- Must be able to enter and exit vehicle cab using footholds and handholds
- May be exposed to heat, cold, dust, irritants
- Must be able to carry up to 75 lbs occasionally, push and pull up to 70 lbs occasionally, lift up to 100 lbs
- Must be able to perform stooping, twisting, balancing, bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling, reaching below shoulder occasionally
- Must frequently reach shoulder or above and sit
- Must maintain a heavy physical demand level
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
- Knowledge of DOT regulations
- Ability to operate a straight truck safely
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to read and understand English
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to perform physical tasks associated with heavy work
- Ability to complete paperwork accurately
- Experience in freight handling preferred but not required
Job Duties
- Develop and maintain effective relationships between the company and the customer
- Perform pickup and delivery service on designated assignment within standards of the Ward productivity measurement systems
- When required, unload and load trailer, either with or without assistance of dockworkers, with or without mechanical freight handling equipment
- Properly perform tasks to assure safety and to prevent damage to cargo
- Ensure all shipment paperwork required to move with shipments are properly completed and accompany each shipment
- Reinforce marketing messages through daily conversations with customers
- Work to understand and support targeted growth plans
- Run assigned route in accordance with manifest/dispatch instructions ensuring key metrics and performance efficiencies
- Promote Ward's identity by wearing the professional uniform
- Provide customers with claim-free handling of their freight while performing pickup and delivery
- Support Ward's claim prevention process by reporting overage, shortage or damage at time of delivery
- Apply OSD labels when appropriate
- Maintain safe driving record
- Demonstrate safe, responsible driving
- Operate company vehicle safely in various conditions
- Perform pre-trip, enroute and post-trip inspections
- Keep tractor interior clean and orderly
- Ensure safe transport of hazardous material in compliance with federal regulations
- Promptly report all accidents and delays
- Submit all required paperwork timely
- Participate in random Non-CDL drug testing
- Maintain security of freight and equipment
- Offer dock supervisors feedback on delivery loading sequence
- Provide constant feedback to Dispatcher and/or Operations Manager
- Communicate customer concerns to Customer Service Coordinator and Territory Sales Manager
- Actively participate in driver meetings and sales huddles
- Regularly communicate with Dispatch about status of pickups, deliveries and delays
- Fully support all technologies and processes introduced by Ward
