Job Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Hepatitis A vaccine required or annual testing if hired
  • Must pass a background check
  • Physical and mental perseverance for fast-paced, demanding work
  • Able to handle exposure to greasy and dirty materials, slippery floors, and noxious odors
  • Capable of frequent repetitive arm and wrist movement
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs and push/pull up to 100 lbs depending on job assignment
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods
  • Adaptability to kitchen environment temperatures ranging from -8 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Ability to climb stairs as necessary
  • Willingness to work during University closings as essential personnel
  • Safe Food Handling and Sanitation Certification required upon employment
  • Subject to tuberculosis testing policy upon final candidacy

Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Skilled in using kitchen tools such as knives, slicers, potato peelers
  • Proficient in safe, sanitary, and effective handling of food and kitchen equipment
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Effective reading and interpretation of written materials, menus, and instructions
  • Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • Understanding and demonstration of Housing and Food Services core values
  • Basic knowledge of nutrition and portion control
  • Experience with time and attendance guidelines and clock systems
  • Ability to handle varying workloads and meet deadlines
  • Basic computer skills

Job Duties

  • Prepares, seasons, cooks, fires and bakes food according to standard recipes following portion control standards
  • Modifies recipes and/or production amounts
  • Ensures optimal quality of food throughout preparation and service
  • Prepares food items for individual serving following portion control standards
  • Determines food quantities, prepares estimates of time, labor and materials for assigned tasks
  • Oversees maintenance of inventory, food consumption and other food service records
  • Operates a variety of manual and/or automatic kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, mixers, slicers, etc.
  • Handles operational readiness and safety of equipment and supplies
  • Adheres to University and Health Department quality standards
  • Provides professional and exceptional customer service
  • Advises supervisor concerning quantity and quality of food and supplies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
