Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • prior cooking experience preferred
  • valid food handler’s certification or ability to obtain
  • valid first aid certification or ability to obtain
  • physical ability to perform job duties including standing for long periods
  • ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • effective communication skills
  • able to work flexible hours

  • ability to maintain sanitary and safe work environment

Job Qualifications

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • prior experience as a line cook or in a similar culinary role preferred
  • knowledge of food safety standards and sanitation practices
  • ability to work with seniors and cognitively impaired individuals
  • effective communication skills in English
  • ability to obtain and maintain valid first aid certification
  • ability to obtain and maintain valid food handler’s certification
  • basic mathematical ability to handle portions and inventory
  • strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • adaptable and flexible to change
  • motivated and able to work independently

Job Duties

  • prepare and cook all food items and meals in accordance with planned menus and recipes ensuring all meals and food prepared are of high quality, palatable and appetizing
  • assist in food preparation for special meals, parties, events
  • prepare soups, appetizers, entrees, vegetables, side dishes, and desserts for both regular and special diets
  • prepare and serve substitute foods to residents who refuse foods served making only authorized food substitutions and consulting with dining services director or sous chef on menu changes
  • prepare food and serve in accordance with sanitary regulations and established policies
  • inspect special diet requests and orders to assure correct diet is served
  • plan timing of food production to coordinate with meal serving hours
  • maintain control over meal portions and food consistency
  • estimate food requirements and control serving portions
  • ensure next day’s items are in stock, pulled and thawing under refrigeration
  • open or close kitchen as scheduled
  • ensure co-workers arrive timely and notify supervisor of any absences or tardiness
  • assist in purchasing, inventory, checking in, and storing of food and supplies
  • ensure stock levels of food, supplies, equipment are maintained
  • ensure food storage areas are clean and properly organized
  • ensure sanitary work environment and conform to local codes on food storage, handling and serving
  • dispose of food and waste according to policy
  • label, date, safely store and efficiently use kitchen inventory
  • record temperatures of coolers and freezers as required
