Job Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, microbiology, biology, or related field
  • Two years experience in chemical or biological analyses including one year in a wastewater treatment plant laboratory
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver’s License
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Grade I Laboratory Analyst Certification issued by the California Water Environment Association
  • Ability to analyze samples using standard methods and follow QA/QC protocols
  • Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations including NPDES and ELAP
  • Ability to safely handle hazardous chemicals and waste
  • Capability to operate laboratory and office equipment including computers and software applications
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to maintain physical requirements such as standing, sitting, bending, lifting up to 30 pounds

Job Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with major coursework in chemistry, microbiology, biology, or related field
  • Two years of experience conducting chemical or biological analyses including one year of experience in wastewater plant laboratory analyses
  • Knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, wastewater treatment processes, and quality assurance protocols
  • Proficient in the operation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Ability to apply statistical analysis to laboratory data
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Capability to independently manage workload and meet deadlines
  • Valid Grade I Laboratory Analyst Certification by California Water Environment Association or similar agency
  • Valid California Driver’s License

Job Duties

  • Perform a variety of journey level laboratory analyses using certified and non-certified test methods on industrial and domestic wastewater samples
  • Support wastewater treatment plant operations through accurate chemical and biological testing
  • Assist in maintaining accreditation with the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP)
  • Input, evaluate, and maintain a variety of laboratory data and documentation including quality data, corrective actions, test records, and calibrations
  • Conduct field sampling and maintain written records of observations
  • Operate, maintain, and prepare laboratory instruments, equipment, reagents, and solutions
  • Apply quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) protocols as outlined in Standard Methods, TNI, and Quality Management Plans
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and safety compliance including hazardous waste storage and chemical hygiene
  • Communicate effectively with plant operational and industrial waste personnel
  • Comply with all City and mandated safety rules and regulations
