Job Description

The Sheriff's Department located in the Archer Complex, Cheyenne, is currently seeking a dedicated and responsible individual to join their team as a full-time Youth Correctional Officer. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two years experience working with juveniles in group, community or educational settings or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Must pass ergometric testing and thorough background investigation
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Must maintain physical fitness to meet Department standards
  • Ability to work shifts including weekends and holidays
  • Must be a United States Citizen or legally permitted to work in the U.S.
  • Must be willing to undergo medical, psychological, polygraph and urinalysis examinations as part of the application process
  • No felony convictions related to theft
  • No illegal steroid use in the last six years
  • No use of heroin or methamphetamines as an adult
  • No involvement in illegal drug manufacturing or distribution
  • No illegal drug use while employed in law enforcement
  • No recent misuse of prescription drugs, inhalants or aerosols
  • No recent convictions for DWI or DUI
  • No false statements in the application process
  • No convictions related to domestic violence
  • Drivers license not suspended in the last year
  • No excessive moving violations
  • Willingness and ability to respond to crisis situations and follow department policies

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working with juveniles in group, community or educational settings
  • Must pass ergometric testing
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required
  • Ability to maintain physical fitness to meet Department standards
  • Knowledge of behavior management concepts and best practices related to delinquent behaviors, substance abuse and mental health
  • Familiarity with non-physical crisis intervention skills
  • Understanding of state, federal and department youth safety standards and procedures
  • Knowledge of Sheriff’s and Juvenile Services Center policies and procedures
  • Awareness of Wyoming criminal justice and court systems
  • Knowledge of hazardous chemicals, fire safety, first aid and CPR
  • Strong skills in emergency response and decision making
  • Ability to interpret laws and work effectively under stress
  • Adept at constructive discipline and role modeling
  • Skilled in identifying teachable moments
  • Competent in interacting with diverse youth populations
  • Computer literacy
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team

Job Duties

  • Promotes a supportive, corrective and therapeutic environment through mentoring
  • Provides leadership to youth through disciplinary actions and supporting educational initiatives
  • Explains agency rules, regulations, policies and procedures to new residents
  • Provides non-physical intervention skills in crisis situations
  • Coordinates, supervises and motivates youth during daily activities
  • Supports the educational department in assisting youth with assignments
  • Coordinates youth access to emotional stability and development services
  • Provides security and direct supervision of youth in a residential facility
  • Greets visitors positively
  • Maintains various records and prepares reports
  • Assists and interacts with other departments and law enforcement agencies
  • Manages radio traffic for facility events and youth movement
  • Safely transports youth to appointments and activities
  • Leads youth participation in community enrichment programs
  • Supports youth in receiving medical care
  • Provides CPR and First Aid as needed
  • Responds promptly to crisis situations following policy
  • Ensures compliance with department policies and procedures
  • Conducts frequent visual inspections of youth and building inspections
  • Enforces compliance with policies and regulations
  • Performs other assigned duties as required
