Job Description

Spokane County's Detention Services department is dedicated to maintaining safe and secure correctional facilities while providing essential services to inmates. As a government entity, the department upholds high standards of professionalism, safety, and integrity, ensuring that all operations comply with legal regulations and contribute to the welfare of the community. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • minimum one year of related experience
  • must obtain Washington State Food Handler's Permit within two weeks of hire
  • possession of valid Washington Driver's License at time of hire and throughout employment
  • ability to work 40 hours per week
  • eligible to work overtime
  • ability to operate County vehicles for transport duties

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • one year of related food preparation experience
  • ability to obtain Washington State Food Handler's Permit within two weeks of hire
  • valid Washington Driver's License
  • knowledge of large-scale food service preparation and management
  • understanding of personal hygiene, food safety, sanitation and handling procedures
  • skilled in use of kitchen utensils and cooking equipment
  • effective oral and written communication skills
  • ability to supervise inmates and staff
  • experience in baking and preparing a variety of foods
  • capability to maintain accurate food inventory and records
  • ability to train others in food preparation and sanitation
  • strong organizational and supervisory skills

Job Duties

  • Supervises inmate workers and participates in cooking, baking and food preparation
  • participates and performs preliminary preparation for next day meals
  • bakes pies, cakes, cookies, biscuits and prepares desserts
  • assists in preparing menu items and adjusts recipes for inmate population changes
  • inspects food to ensure proper quantity, quality and handling
  • instructs and trains employees and inmate workers in sanitation and food handling
  • controls waste and theft of food
  • operates mixers, ovens, steamers, grills, food processors and other kitchen equipment
  • receives food and nonfood orders and manages product rotation
  • directly supervises inmate workers cleaning trays, utensils, cookware and kitchen areas
  • maintains facility security in kitchen operations and inventories utensils and equipment
  • supervises up to 20 inmate workers on kitchen duties
  • participates in inmate worker training and monitors behavior and progress
  • transports food and supplies between facilities using a County vehicle
  • performs other related duties as assigned
