Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate (GED)
  • Successfully pass State and Federal criminal history and security background checks including Virginia Department of Transportation fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC)
  • Possess a valid Virginia Class D License with a clean driving record for the past 7 years
  • Participate in monthly MVR monitoring program and maintain satisfactory driving record
  • Dependability and schedule flexibility for after-hours incident response
  • Keen situational awareness and attention to safety
  • Ability to work independently and in coordination with a team
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments with variable conditions and perform physically demanding tasks
  • Frequent operation of vehicles and lifting of weights up to and exceeding 75 pounds
  • Willingness to work along roadsides in uncontrolled work environments
  • Ability to wear associated personal protective equipment

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Basic understanding of Incident Command System
  • Proficient use of computers for administrative tasks
  • Ability to work independently and critical thinking skills
  • Professional presentation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to accomplish and maintain required training and certifications including First Aid, CPR, and National Incident Management Systems
  • Radio and telecommunications skills
  • Regional geography and roadway familiarity

Job Duties

  • Close coordination with the regional Traffic Operations Center and engagement with law enforcement, DOT, fire department, emergency rescue, towing and recovery companies
  • Respond to major traffic incidents to provide information and asset coordination for the DOT
  • Participate in traffic management planning for regional events including festivals, concerts, and major highway construction or maintenance projects
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the highway responder community to strengthen inter-agency coordination and communication at traffic incidents
  • Facilitate after-action reviews to promote improved coordination between responding agencies
  • Operate in outdoor environments with varied conditions, handling physical tasks such as lifting, bending, standing, and working at heights
  • Wear personal protective equipment and maintain safety protocols while performing duties along roadsides in uncontrolled environments
