Job Requirements
- high school diploma or equivalent certificate (GED)
- valid Virginia Class D driver's license with clean driving record for past seven years
- successful completion of state and federal criminal history and security background checks including fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) by Virginia Department of Transportation
- participation in monthly motor vehicle record (MVR) monitoring program and maintaining a satisfactory driving record
- dependability and schedule flexibility for after-hours responses
- keen situational awareness and attention to safety
- ability to work independently and collaboratively
- professional presentation and effective interpersonal communication skills
- basic understanding of the Incident Command System
- regional familiarization with geography and roadways
- ability to obtain and maintain required training and certifications including First Aid, CPR, and National Incident Management Systems
- radio and telecommunications competency
- physical ability to work outdoors in uneven terrain and variable conditions
- frequent vehicle operation and lifting abilities
- willingness to wear personal protective equipment
- ability to work in an uncontrolled roadside environment

- ability to complete and maintain training and certifications such as First Aid, CPR, and National Incident Management Systems
Job Duties
- Coordinate closely with the regional Traffic Operations Center and engage with highway responders such as law enforcement, DOT, fire department, emergency rescue, and towing and recovery companies
- respond to major traffic incidents by providing information and asset coordination for the DOT
- participate in traffic management planning for high-impact regional events like festivals, concerts, and major highway construction or maintenance projects
- develop and maintain relationships among the highway responder community within the Salem District to strengthen inter-agency coordination and communication
- facilitate after-action reviews to improve coordination between responding agencies during traffic incident management
- work in outdoor environments with varying terrain and conditions, including handling hazardous automotive-related chemicals
- operate vehicles frequently, lift and move equipment of varying weights, and use personal protective equipment in a roadside environment
