Job Requirements

  • one to three months of on the job training plus formal and ongoing classroom training
  • physical capability to perform continuous walking, standing, carrying, pushing carts weighing up to 400 pounds, stooping, lifting, climbing ladders and stairs
  • ability to work in varying weather conditions and tolerate exposure to unpleasant odors, contaminated items and strong cleaning solutions
  • adherence to safety precautions to minimize hazards
  • no supervisory responsibility
  • must carry and use a beeper or two-way radio when requested
  • ability to assist in related roles such as housekeeping aide and laundry aide when needed

Job Qualifications

  • ability to follow instructions and observe safety precautions
  • ability to prepare cleaning solutions according to procedures
  • ability to assemble cleaning equipment such as mops, dusters, vacuum cleaners, mop buckets and ringers
  • ability to read, write, understand and speak English
  • ability to count numbers
  • ability to operate, control and clean motorized and manual equipment needed for cleaning tasks
  • ability to perform duties safely and professionally in accordance with department policies and procedures
  • physical ability to lift, carry or push heavy equipment and materials
  • good communication and collaboration skills
  • willingness to work evening shifts, weekends and holidays

Job Duties

  • perform heavy cleaning duties following established procedures
  • shampoo carpets and upholstery and refinish floors using manual and motorized equipment
  • dust high vents, lights, pipes, lockers, ceilings and wash window glass
  • clean wastebaskets, television sets, fans and rubber mats
  • wash and disinfect all sinks, toilets, floors, urinals, bedpan racks, bathtubs, and showers
  • service and refill soap and paper dispensers
  • wash walls manually or mechanically
  • prepare burn and radiation rooms by laying protective covering
  • clean and disinfect beds, mattresses and sleeping carts
  • pick up and dispose of rubbish and soiled linen appropriately
  • remove rubbish from chute rooms and transport heavy rubbish for disposal
  • wash rubbish chute rooms and rubbish trucks
  • perform minor services on rubbish trucks
  • operate baler equipment for boxes and recycle totes
  • clean, spot clean, and polish walls, woodwork, furniture, brass fittings and stainless steel
  • transport animal waste and soiled linens
  • move mattresses and furniture including beds and cribs
  • assist nursing personnel in moving beds and furniture
  • clean sidewalks and entrances including snow and salt removal
  • change cubicle curtains and draperies
  • clean and repair window blinds
  • clean construction areas after renovations
  • carry and use a beeper or two-way radio when requested
  • assist supply clerks in supply or equipment rooms
  • service batteries on battery-operated devices
  • set up conference rooms for events
  • perform supply clerk duties in their absence
  • take laundry linen inventory
  • perform duties of Housekeeping Aide I and Laundry Aide II as required
  • perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or group leader
