Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Suitability for Federal employment based on background investigation
  • Successful completion of drug screening urinalysis prior to appointment
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Completion of online onboarding process with acceptable identification
  • Ability to serve a 1-year probationary period
  • Completion of all application requirements by closing date
  • Physical ability to perform duties including continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing
  • Capability to safely operate heavy powered cleaning equipment and handle hazardous materials
  • Willingness to work multiple shifts and various designated facility areas
  • Commitment to comply with VA policies including influenza vaccination or approved exemption
  • No requirement for specific education qualifications

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing solutions for various surfaces
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy power cleaning equipment
  • Familiarity with infection control and hazardous waste handling procedures
  • Ability to perform deep cleaning and special cleaning tasks using aseptic techniques
  • Mental concentration for independent task scheduling and execution
  • Good interpersonal skills for working near patients
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for process documentation
  • Ability to identify medical and hazardous waste types
  • Experience or training demonstrating ability to perform housekeeping duties in a healthcare setting
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions, physical strength and agility, and special aptitude for housekeeping work
  • Ability to work with little supervision

Job Duties

  • Performs floor maintenance activities including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, buffing, and vacuuming carpets and runners
  • Cleans walls, doors, doorframes, baseboards, corners, edges, and stairwells using manual and industrial equipment
  • Empties trash and wastebaskets, replaces liners, and transports general refuse, regulated medical waste, and recycling to central collection areas
  • Cleans restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms, including disinfecting and deodorizing lavatories, urinals, toilets, sinks, mirrors, and fixtures
  • Replenishes supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and soap in dispensers
  • Operates, adjusts, and performs minor maintenance on cleaning equipment including buffer machines and pressure washers
  • Follows infection control and hazardous waste procedures and properly handles biohazardous waste
  • Works independently or as part of a team across multiple facility areas and shifts
  • Adheres to safety protocols and uses personal protective equipment as required
