Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or possess a work permit
  • No prior experience required, on-the-job training provided
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English
  • Must be physically able to perform job duties including lifting up to twenty-five pounds
  • Must comply with facility health requirements including medical and physical examination
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others
  • Must follow written and oral instructions regarding cleaning chemicals and solutions
  • Must maintain confidentiality of resident information
  • Must be able to work various shifts including weekends, holidays, and emergency call-backs
  • Must be willing to work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and hostile individuals
  • Must have the ability to accept constructive criticism and follow instructions
  • Must be able to maintain order, sanitation, and safety in resident rooms and work areas

Job Duties

  • Ensure that work and cleaning schedules are followed as closely as practical
  • Report all accidents and incidents to supervisor no matter how minor
  • Coordinate daily housekeeping services with nursing services when performing routine cleaning assignments
  • Attend departmental and staff meetings as directed
  • Perform specific tasks as per daily work assignments
  • File complaints and grievances with supervisor
  • Participate in department studies and projects as directed
  • Attend in-service educational classes and training programs
  • Follow established fire safety policies and procedures
  • Use safety equipment when lifting or moving heavy objects
  • Maintain work areas in a clean, safe, and attractive manner
  • Follow proper techniques when mixing cleaning chemicals and disinfectants
  • Report hazardous conditions or equipment to supervisor
  • Maintain infection control and universal precaution practices
  • Use personal protective equipment when handling infectious or hazardous materials
  • Follow handwashing and sanitation procedures
  • Dispose of refuse in accordance with sanitation policies
  • Coordinate isolation cleaning procedures with nursing service
  • Ensure adequate housekeeping supplies are maintained and report supply needs
  • Report malfunctioning lights and equipment to supervisor
  • Assist with lifting heavy equipment as needed
  • Clean work and supply carts and properly store equipment
  • Perform day-to-day housekeeping functions including cleaning and polishing furnishings, fixtures, floors, carpets, walls, windows, and bathrooms
  • Remove dirt, dust, grease, and film from surfaces
  • Clean hallways, stairways, and elevators
  • Discard waste and infectious materials properly
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident information
  • Knock before entering resident rooms
  • Honor residents' personal and property rights
  • Inform residents when moving personal possessions during cleaning
  • Turn in found articles to supervisor
  • Work in all areas of the facility and manage interruptions
  • Handle interactions with residents, personnel, visitors, and officials tactfully
  • Work beyond normal hours and on weekends or holidays as needed
  • Respond to emergency call-backs
  • Attend continuing education programs
  • Comply with physical and sensory requirements including lifting up to twenty-five pounds
  • Assist evacuation during emergencies.
