Job Requirements

  • Minimum eighth grade education
  • At least 18 years of age or possess an executed work permit
  • No prior experience required as on-the-job training is provided
  • Must be able to understand the English language
  • Must have the ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, and accept constructive criticism
  • Must possess tactful communication skills with personnel, residents, visitors, government agencies, and the public
  • Must maintain cleanliness and safety standards in housekeeping areas
  • Must perform regular inspections of resident rooms for sanitation, safety, and order
  • Must be willing to work harmoniously with other personnel and handle residents maturely
  • Must be willing to learn and adopt new housekeeping methods
  • Must be able to follow instructions for handling cleaning compounds and disinfectants
  • Must be able to relay resident condition information
  • Must not pose direct health or safety threat to others in the workplace
  • Must be physically capable of intermittent movement throughout workday
  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress
  • Must have adequate sight and hearing or appropriate prosthetics
  • Must function independently with integrity and flexibility
  • Must meet health requirements per facility policies including medical and physical exams
  • Must be able to work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and sometimes hostile individuals
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, or lift a minimum of twenty-five pounds
  • May be required to assist in emergency evacuations
  • Must be able to work beyond normal hours, holidays, and be subject to call-backs in emergencies

Job Duties

  • Ensure that work cleaning schedules are followed as closely as practical
  • Report all accidents incidents to supervisor on the shift they occur
  • Coordinate daily housekeeping services with nursing services during routine cleaning
  • Attend departmental and staff meetings as directed
  • Perform specific tasks according to daily work assignments
  • File complaints grievances with supervisor
  • Participate and assist in department studies and projects as directed
  • Attend and participate in in-service educational classes and training
  • Attend and participate in OSHA and CDC in-service training programs
  • Follow established fire safety policies and procedures
  • Follow established safety precautions when performing tasks
  • Wear and use safety equipment when lifting or moving heavy objects
  • Maintain work areas in a clean, safe, and attractive manner
  • Keep work areas free of hazardous objects
  • Follow proper techniques when mixing chemicals and disinfectants
  • Follow policies for the use of labels and MSDSs
  • Report hazardous conditions or equipment to supervisor
  • Maintain infection control and universal precaution practices
  • Report missing or improperly labeled hazardous chemical containers
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment for infectious materials
  • Follow handwashing procedures
  • Dispose of refuse daily according to sanitation procedures
  • Follow policies for disposal of protective equipment and infectious waste
  • Coordinate isolation cleaning procedures with nursing service
  • Maintain adequate supply of housekeeping supplies
  • Report supply needs to supervisor
  • Report burnt out lights or malfunctioning equipment
  • Assist others in lifting heavy equipment as needed
  • Clean work supply carts and equipment
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned and stored at the end of the shift
  • Perform day-to-day housekeeping functions as assigned
  • Empty and sanitize ash trays daily
  • Clean and polish furnishings, fixtures, heating and cooling units
  • Clean and sanitize bathroom fixtures
  • Clean windows and mirrors in all areas
  • Clean floors including sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing
  • Clean carpets including vacuuming
  • Clean walls and ceilings by washing and spot cleaning
  • Remove dirt and grease from surfaces
  • Clean hallways, stairways, and elevators
  • Discard waste into proper containers and reline trash receptacles
  • Clean vacant rooms as assigned
  • Ensure proper storage of equipment and supplies
  • Perform isolation cleaning following infection control procedures
  • Discard infectious wastes properly
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident information
  • Knock before entering resident rooms
  • Honor resident personal and property rights
  • Inform residents when moving personal possessions during cleaning
  • Turn in all found articles to supervisor
  • Work in all areas of the facility
  • Move intermittently throughout the work day
  • Reschedule cleaning activities due to frequent interruptions
  • Interact with residents, personnel, visitors, and government agencies
  • Handle hostile and upset individuals with tact
  • Work beyond normal hours and on weekends and holidays as needed
  • Be subject to call-back during emergencies
  • Attend continuing educational programs
  • Take precautions to avoid injuries from falls, burns, odors, and dust
  • Handle exposure to infectious waste, diseases, and hazardous chemicals
  • Assist in evacuations during emergencies
  • Perform other housekeeping duties as necessary
