Job Description
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (DPS) is a state law enforcement agency dedicated to safeguarding the citizens and communities of New Mexico. Within this department, the New Mexico State Police functions as a critical division tasked with maintaining public safety through enforcement, emergency response, and specialized operations. The Special Operations Bureau, specifically the Aircraft Section, plays a vital role in supporting law enforcement efforts across the state via aviation capabilities. Job Requirements
- Associate's degree with a technical or aviation-related discipline
- 1,500 hours of helicopter Pilot in Command flight time
- FAA Commercial Pilot's License with helicopter and instrument rating
- current FAA Class II Medical Certificate
- any combination of education and/or experience totaling two years may substitute for required education
- pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting
- felony-free status in accordance with Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy
- valid driver's license and Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico or ability to obtain one
- able to lift 25 pounds
- willingness to work varied conditions including extended sitting in aircraft and occasional overnight stays away from duty location
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with a technical or aviation-related discipline
- 2,500 hours of Pilot in Command time with majority in helicopters
- FAA Commercial Pilot's License with helicopter rating and instrument rating
- Certified Flight Instructor - Helicopter
- current FAA Class II Medical Certificate
- experience with Night Vision Goggles and hoist rescue operations
- high altitude flying experience above 6000 feet MSL
Job Duties
- Plan and fly law enforcement, search and rescue, and patrol missions across the state
- assist the Tactical Team with high-risk warrants and call-outs, including transporting team members
- train and maintain currency with other pilots and Tactical Flight Officers
- transport Department of Public Safety personnel and VIPs as requested
- perform landings for public relations events
- coordinate with State Police management on aviation asset use
- conduct daily aircraft inspections and maintain flight logs and pilot records to comply with FAA and federal regulations
