Job Requirements

  • master's degree in environmental health and safety or hazardous materials or related field and 5 years related experience, or bachelor's degree and 7 years related experience
  • ability to organize and implement procedures independently
  • significant technical knowledge of safety regulations
  • strong verbal and written communication skills
  • ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team
  • flexibility to adapt to changing work environments
  • established presentation and training skills
  • customer service skills
  • working knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • ability to travel and work across multiple sites
  • physical ability to walk throughout facilities and withstand moderate physical exertion
  • willingness to participate in on-call rotation
  • ability to respond to emergency situations including hazardous material spills
  • discretion and good judgment
  • certification such as CSP, CHSP, CIH, or CHMM required within two years of hire
  • no visa sponsorship available

Job Qualifications

  • positive customer service skills
  • working knowledge of PC and routine computer software packages
  • healthcare safety experience preferred
  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour certification desirable
  • experience in emergency management, hazardous materials and waste management, industrial hygiene, or ergonomics desirable
  • able to respond to hazardous materials spills
  • experience in research or clinical laboratory safety preferred
  • ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • good judgment and discretion
  • ability to work with all levels of management and staff
  • ability to travel and conduct work throughout all locations
  • ability to walk throughout campus and facilities
  • ability to withstand moderate physical exertion

Job Duties

  • work as member of the environmental health and occupational safety department
  • receive guidance from the senior health and safety specialist and direction from the director of the department
  • maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff
  • act on behalf of the department director in their absence to ensure continuity of safety management and emergency response
  • serve as safety consultant and resource in safety, emergency management, and hazardous materials and waste programs
  • participate in administrative duties including budget and resource allocation and facilitation of staff involved in safety projects
  • develop and implement new policies, procedures, and educational programs
  • conduct safety audits and perform hazard assessments including interpretation of results and implementation of solutions
  • analyze and interpret data and participate in decisions regarding data validity and conclusions
  • collaborate with enterprise safety, emergency management, and waste management contacts
  • maintain strict confidentiality of information
