The State of Connecticut, through its Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS), is seeking dedicated and experienced professionals to fill full-time Head Cook positions at Vinal Technical High School in Middletown, CT, and the anticipated opening at Eli Whitney Technical High School in Hamden, CT. Job Requirements
- Three years of experience in the preparation and cooking of food
- One year of the general experience must have been in the preparation of food on a quantity basis
- Current Connecticut Technical Education and Career System employee preferred
- Ability to meet physical demands including lifting moderate to heavy weights
- Must be free from communicable diseases
- Ability to work Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:00 pm
- Willingness to work in a high school cafeteria environment
- Must meet minimum qualifications by the job closing date
- ServSafe Certification required or obtained within 60 days of hiring
Job Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply cooking principles and techniques on a quantity basis
- Knowledge of institutional cooking methods
- Knowledge of health and safety requirements in food service
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to prepare menus and keep records
- Ability to utilize computer software
- Demonstrated supervisory ability
- Experience in preparation and serving of complete daily meals in a large scale institutional or commercial setting
- Experience using institutional food service cooking equipment
- Experience following basic food safety and sanitation guidelines and procedures
- Experience using basic computer software systems including email
- ServSafe Certification or the ability to obtain within 60 days upon hiring
Job Duties
- Plan kitchen workflow and determine priorities
- Schedule, assign, oversee and review work
- Establish and maintain kitchen procedures
- Provide staff training and assistance
- Conduct or assist in conducting performance evaluations
- Act as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures
- Inspect and requisition food and supplies
- Supervise the cleaning of kitchen and other food service areas and of equipment
- May make recommendations on policies or standards
- May prepare reports and correspondence
- May plan menus and be responsible for serving of meals
- Performs the full range of duties as outlined in the Cook specification
- Performs related duties as required
