Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety management, engineering, or related technical field
  • Seven years of experience in safety program development or risk management
  • Three years in supervisory or management role
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license
  • Preferred completion of Rail Accident Investigation, Bus Collision Investigation and Traffic Investigation I and II
  • Must comply with CTA’s residency ordinance
  • Ability to work irregular hours and in various environmental conditions
  • Must wear personal protective equipment
  • Must live within CTA Statutory Service Area within 6 months of employment

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Engineering or related technical field
  • Seven years of experience in safety program development or risk management, with three years in supervisory or management role
  • Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) training certifications (TSSP) preferred
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license
  • Completion of Rail Accident Investigation, Bus Collision Investigation and Traffic Investigation I and II preferred
  • Detailed knowledge of System Safety Engineering Practices
  • Detailed knowledge of investigation, research, analysis and data compilation methods
  • Knowledge of construction safety practices and techniques
  • Familiarity with federal and state safety rules and regulations
  • Working knowledge of transit operations, facilities, vehicles, rules and procedures
  • Strong project management skills

  • Ability to interpret and apply federal regulations

Job Duties

  • Oversees development, implementation and evaluation of proactive safety programs, policies and procedures in compliance with regulations and Authority standards
  • Develops and administers safety programs, policies, procedures training, objectives and initiatives to promote safe operations and incident prevention
  • Confirms compliance with standards and best practices
  • Oversees development and administration of goals and objectives for Transit System Safety
  • Verifies rule compliance as it relates to policies and procedures, bulletins, and standard operating procedures
  • Manages Transit System Safety processes and procedures
  • Oversees inspections of stations, footwalks, facilities, subways, right-of-ways, garages, bus routes and roadways
  • Collaborates with Authority personnel to identify and implement long-term solutions to systemic safety issues
  • Facilitates safety incident investigations and provides recommendations
  • Reviews vital safety records and manages recordkeeping practices
  • Represents System Safety and CTA in regulatory safety matters
  • Coordinates with federal and state safety oversight agencies
  • Acts as safety knowledge expert and chairs committees to ensure transit safety and security activities
  • Develops and implements performance measurement and safety criteria through technology
  • Provides oversight of inspection and investigation follow-up processes, including corrective action plans
  • Hires, trains, develops, monitors and evaluates staff
  • Reviews and recommends personnel actions
  • Ensures ongoing professional development for direct reports
  • Performs related duties as assigned
