Job Description
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is a state government agency responsible for the construction, maintenance, and regulation of transportation systems throughout Texas. Job Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Four years of related work experience for General Engineering Tech I
- Six years of related work experience for General Engineering Tech II
- Valid driver's license
- Valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B or obtain within 180 days of hire
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical
- Ability to pass a drug test prior to employment
- Ability to respond to emergency situations within 45 minutes on a 24-hour basis
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently
- Ability to work under extreme weather conditions
- Ability to walk long distances between work sites
- Ability to operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
- Ability to maintain visual acuity for detailed work and equipment operation
Job Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Four years of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work for General Engineering Tech I
- Six years of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work for General Engineering Tech II
- Extensive knowledge of applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
- Knowledge of materials used in highway and bridge construction and maintenance
- Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Considerable knowledge of plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
- Considerable knowledge of construction record auditing
- Proficient skill in analyzing and organizing business and technical data
- Proficient skill in using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
- Proficient skill in maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
- Proficient skill in monitoring contracts and procedures
- For General Engineering Tech II, knowledge of applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
- Valid driver's license
- Valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B or willingness to obtain a Class A Commercial License within 180 days of hire
Job Duties
- Review and coordinate with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities
- Conduct tests of highway construction materials, make calculations, and record results
- Inspect barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards
- Inspect construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications
- Inspect traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Monitor and/or maintain construction records to ensure contractors comply with federal requirements regarding Equal Employment Opportunity, on-the-job training programs, the Historically Underutilized Business and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise programs
- Operate light and heavy equipment
- perform preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment
- Research plan sets and review proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimates and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures and design guidelines
- Review and assist in the development of traffic control plans, coordinate with law enforcement agencies, monitor lane closures at construction sites, document changes in the traffic control setup and coordinate with the Public Information Officer
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned
- Consult with contractors' superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems
- review equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates
- Serve as project leader responsible for construction inspection activities for large and/or complex construction projects or for multiple district construction projects
