Job Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • No previous work experience required but experience in dining service or coffee shop preferred
  • High degree of customer service and communication skills
  • Understanding of health and sanitation regulations preferred
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain kitchen equipment
  • Ability to understand written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work under time deadlines and manage time efficiently
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects
  • Skill in organization, coordinating, and time management
  • Ability to understand and follow safety policies and procedures

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of food and beverage preparation and safety practices preferred
  • Experience with point of sale systems beneficial
  • Ability to work effectively under deadlines and manage time efficiently
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Basic knowledge of kitchen sanitation and safety standards
  • Ability to teach and supervise student volunteers
  • Commitment to following safety policies and procedures

Job Duties

  • Act as greeter and receptionist to visitors, provide way-finding directions, answer and transfer calls, participate in events
  • Greet guests and customers, take orders, prepare and serve hot and cold beverages including coffee and espresso drinks, maintain cleanliness of lobby, patio, and surrounding areas
  • Maintain exceptional customer relations and ensure timely delivery of all orders
  • Work directly with student volunteers teaching food and beverage safety, sales practices, inventory management, ordering, food preparation, and storage
  • Operate point of sale system for cash and credit sales, print necessary sales reports
  • Prepare and store food according to Serve Safe standards
  • Maintain kitchen sanitation and safety including cleaning utensils and equipment, proper food labeling, and protection against contamination
  • Follow safety rules, identify and report hazards, attend mandatory safety in-services, and use proper body mechanics
  • Adhere to St. John’s customer service guidelines by greeting warmly, making eye contact, providing immediate service, and using appropriate body language
  • Comply with employee responsibilities including TB testing, influenza vaccinations, mandatory training, and time clock procedures
  • Assist Common Grounds Coordinator with inventory, menu, and drink creation
  • Perform other duties as assigned
