Academic Year in America (AYA) is a premier organization specializing in high school cultural exchange and homestay programs in the United States. Founded in 1981, AYA has established itself as a trusted leader in promoting intercultural understanding and lifelong connections among students, host families, and communities. Sponsored by the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) Foundation—a nonprofit entity founded in 1967 with the assistance of the late Senator Robert F. Job Requirements

  • Must be 25 years or older
  • must have a valid driver’s license
  • reliable transportation
  • ability to devote 10-15 hours per week including evenings and weekends
  • ability to temporarily host a student or secure a temporary host family in emergencies
  • job requires a background check

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to build strong community relationships and think creatively to overcome challenges
  • enjoys working with and supporting both adults and teenagers
  • experience in marketing, education, social work, international relations, or related fields is a plus
  • comfortable using social media and online tools for promotion and reporting
  • ability to temporarily host a student in your home or identify a temporary host family in the event of an emergency
  • must be 25 years or older with a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Job Duties

  • Network and promote the AYA program through community outreach efforts
  • build relationships with local schools to facilitate student enrollment
  • recruit and screen suitable host families that meet the requirements of the program
  • conduct monthly check-ins with students and host families to ensure safety and satisfaction
  • provide logistical, emotional, and social support to students, host families, and schools
  • implement conflict resolution and mediation strategies when needed
  • offer temporary housing or secure emergency accommodations with another vetted host family when necessary
  • fulfill reporting requirements and maintain accurate documentation
