The Oceanside Fire Department Hand Crew Program, also known as the Fire Mountain Crew, is a dedicated and highly specialized pilot program designed to bolster wildfire preparedness, community resilience, and statewide fire suppression efforts throughout California. Job Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire
- equivalent to graduation from high school
- possession of a valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
- physically capable of performing strenuous manual labor in rugged terrain and adverse weather
- willing to work flexible and frequently changing schedules including long shifts (up to 24 hours per day)
- able to work outdoors under extreme environmental conditions
- available for extended assignments (two weeks or longer)
- able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- able to follow oral and written instructions accurately
- capable of lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance
- able to pass background reference check including fingerprinting and medical examination
- drug screening may be required
Job Qualifications
- Equivalent to graduation from high school
- possession of a valid (California) driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
- current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross CPR card is preferred
- related certifications in Incident Command (IS-100) and Wildland Fire Service (S-130) are desirable
- six (6) months of part-time or full-time work experience is preferred
- ability to communicate effectively and clearly both verbally and in writing
- ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public
- ability to work effectively as part of a disciplined team
Job Duties
- Perform various types of semi-skilled labor in support of fire prevention activities
- cut and remove brush from roadsides, fire roads, and fuel breaks using hand and power tools
- serve as a crewmember on vegetation management projects involving chainsaws, chippers, and other tools
- clear, pile, and dispose of treated vegetation
- operate material handling equipment
- construct fire lines during vegetation fires using hand and power tools
- conduct mop-up and patrol operations
- collect data on fuel samples, fuel types, weather conditions, fire behavior, and work progress
- clean, maintain, recondition, and properly store tools and equipment
- perform minor maintenance and repairs on fire department equipment and vehicles
- conduct light facility maintenance, including landscaping, carpentry, masonry, paving, plumbing, fabrication, demolition, painting, and prep work
- operate vehicles and assist fire personnel with specialized equipment
- participate in flood control efforts, including trenching, sandbagging, and debris removal
- respond to non-wildfire and all-hazard incidents such as HAZMAT, search and rescue, as trained and qualified
- support fire department programs, including equipment management, billing, and fire cache supply logistics
- assist with administrative tasks, including reports, data entry, filing, inspections, training documentation, and research
- provide logistical support and instruction for fire-related trainings (e.g., wildfire suppression, incident management, first aid), as qualified
- be available for deployment to emergency worksites by ground or air (fixed-wing or rotary aircraft)
- participate in department physical fitness programs
- maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, city staff, and the public using good customer service principles
- perform related duties as assigned to support the mission of the Oceanside Fire Department
