Job Requirements

  • must be 18 years or older
  • high school diploma or GED
  • safe food handling and sanitation certification may be required upon employment
  • physical endurance for fast-paced and demanding responsibilities
  • ability to handle greasy, dirty materials and work in slippery conditions
  • ability to walk or ride between buildings
  • frequent repetitive arm and wrist movement
  • exposure to chemicals and noxious odors
  • ability to lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull up to 100 lbs
  • ability to stand and walk for long periods
  • adapt to kitchen environments with varying temperatures from 8 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit
  • climb stairs as needed
  • willing to work nights and weekends
  • subject to tuberculosis testing policy
  • completion of background and police records check

Job Qualifications

  • high school diploma or GED
  • uses kitchen tools and small equipment with reasonable proficiency
  • skilled in safe, sanitary, and effective handling of food, utensils, and processing equipment
  • basic understanding of nutrition and portion control
  • effective communication skills in English, orally and in writing
  • ability to read and interpret routine written materials
  • basic math and computer skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • ability to understand and apply time and attendance guidelines
  • ability to handle varying workloads and meet deadlines
  • knowledge of Housing and Food Services core values

Job Duties

  • wash dishes in a campus restaurant
  • prepare, season, cook, fire, and bake food according to standard recipes and portion control standards
  • modify recipes and production amounts as needed
  • ensure optimal quality of food throughout preparation and service
  • prepare food items for individual serving following portion control standards
  • determine food quantities and prepare estimates of time, labor, and materials for assigned tasks
  • assist with maintenance of inventory, food consumption, and other food service records
  • operate manual and automatic kitchen equipment such as ovens, dishwashers, grills, mixers, and slicers
  • handle operational readiness and safety of equipment and supplies
  • adhere to university and Health Department quality standards
  • advise supervisor concerning quantity and quality of food and supplies
  • assist with ordering, planning, special events, cleaning, receiving, and stocking of products
  • assist with putting away food items and restaurant supplies from deliveries
  • perform regular maintenance of kitchen equipment including grills, vent hoods, and fryers
  • work in dish room maintaining cleanliness and sanitation
