Job Requirements

  • High school education minimum
  • Two years relevant cooking experience in residential, school, or catering settings
  • Knowledge of healthy nutrition and portion sizes
  • Experience with menu planning and food safety protocols
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and internet use
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly
  • Ability to stand, walk, reach, talk and hear for most of the shift
  • Ability to maintain composure and work quality in a busy kitchen environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with professionalism
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Reliable and detail-oriented
  • Ability to work weekends, specifically Saturday and Sunday from 7 am to 3 pm

Job Qualifications

  • High school education minimum, education in nutrition, culinary arts, menu planning, or food sanitation preferred
  • At least two years relevant experience as a cook in residential, school, or catering settings
  • Experience planning and preparing nutritionally balanced meals for groups
  • Experience teaching independent living skills related to cooking and meal planning
  • Knowledge of agency compliance policies and regulations
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and in a team
  • Basic computer literacy including Microsoft Word and internet skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Excellent attention to detail and confidentiality
  • Ability to relate well with others and maintain professional empathy
  • Good judgment and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in a highly sensitive environment
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills

Job Duties

  • Plan daily and weekly nutritionally balanced menus
  • Order food, schedule and receive food and beverage deliveries, checking delivery contents to verify product quality and quantity
  • Establish procedures for food storage, rotation and labeling ensuring cleanliness, hygiene, safety and reducing waste
  • Monitor food preparation methods, portion sizes, and presentation to ensure compliance with food safety guidelines and aesthetic appeal
  • Teach staff and clients about appropriate food handling, portions, and nutritional value
  • Maintain prep areas and kitchen equipment in a clean, sanitary and safe manner
  • Monitor food budgets and stay within budgeted amounts
  • Prepare dishes using established cooking skills with healthy ingredients
  • Adjust menu offerings for dietary restrictions
  • Understand and comply with food safety and temperature standards
  • Prepare seven main dishes for dinner and three to four simple lunches per week
  • Assist clients in meal preparation through hands-on learning
  • Act as a positive role model ensuring agency diplomacy in a welcoming and empathic manner
  • Work with program staff to distribute lunches and snacks
  • Answer program phone and relay calls and messages as necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
