Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Twelve months of food service experience required
  • Must obtain or possess a food safety certification (e.g., SERV Safe, Learn to Serve, Food Protection Manager) within six months of hire
  • Must pass fingerprint criminal background check
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Must pass registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE
  • Males aged 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policies required
  • Valid Texas driver license required if driving a state vehicle, must be obtained within 90 days of hire if applicable
  • Ability to work flexible hours including overtime and rotating shifts
  • Must be able to work full-time in-person at San Antonio State Hospital

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • At least twelve months of experience in food service work required
  • Ability to speak and read English effectively
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods and sanitation regulations
  • Skill in operating and sanitizing food service equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately
  • Basic math skills applicable to cooking and food preparation
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Willingness to obtain food safety certification within six months of employment

Job Duties

  • Attend work regularly and follow assigned shift schedule including potential rotating shifts, extended hours, and overtime
  • Assist in preparation and portioning of food for regular and therapeutic diets following established food service procedures
  • Prepare scheduled snacks and maintain snack supplies
  • Participate in the safe and sanitary distribution of food according to food service policies
  • Assist in serving food while adhering to food safety procedures
  • Follow proper food handling practices in compliance with state, federal, and HACCP guidelines
  • Receive delivery of food and supplies and prepare necessary paperwork timely and accurately
  • Sanitize and maintain kitchen, stockroom, and food preparation areas according to sanitation procedures
  • Observe all safety practices and procedures
  • Train or assist in training new kitchen staff to ensure knowledgeable personnel
  • Perform other duties as assigned including supporting disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) activities as required
