Job Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • suitable for federal employment as determined by background investigation
  • selective service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • completion of online onboarding process including acceptable identification
  • completion of all application requirements including resume submission
  • willingness to serve a 1-year probationary period
  • compliance with Department of Veterans Affairs vaccination policies
  • ability to stand and walk continuously, frequently bend and lift moderate weights
  • availability to work full-time, Friday to Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with days off Wednesday and Thursday
  • no relocation or recruitment incentives authorized

Job Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience or training in food service operations
  • ability to perform duties with dexterity and safety
  • capable of interpreting instructions and specifications
  • knowledge of materials and technical kitchen practices
  • skill in using and maintaining kitchen tools and equipment
  • ability to work without more than normal supervision
  • understanding of appropriate work practices
  • experience interacting with customers or patients
  • physical ability to perform tasks requiring moderate to heavy effort

Job Duties

  • Set up cafeteria lines, steam tables, dining room tables, and side service stands with hot and cold food items
  • serve food cafeteria style by placing uniform portions on customers' or patients' plates
  • break down and clean assigned area after meals and return food to the kitchen
  • set up dining room tables for service and replenish food and beverages
  • return soiled trays and dishes to dish room
  • deliver meal trays to patients' bedsides
  • brew coffee according to servings required
  • assemble and toss fruit or green salads with dressings and standard portions
  • apportion food items into standard serving sizes
  • make cold sandwiches and pack box lunches
  • work in kitchen areas including food preparation, dishwashing, storage, receiving, and serving line
  • sort, wash, peel, and cut fresh fruits and vegetables
  • operate and break down kitchen equipment
  • perform heavy cleaning tasks in food service areas
  • separate food waste and trash in dishwashing area
  • perform preventive maintenance on dish machines
  • unload delivery trucks
  • store sanitized dishes and utensils
  • scrape, soak, scour, and scrub cooking utensils
  • move heavy garbage cans
  • perform other assigned duties
