The Department of the Air Force is currently seeking a dedicated and motivated individual for a flexible Summer Hire position located at the Youth Center on Langley Air Force Base (AFB), Virginia. Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must provide a copy of high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must complete pre-employment checks including Air Force and DoD policy requirements and Child Care Tier 1 background investigation
  • Must complete favorable pre-employment physical due to lifting requirements
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current immunizations including annual influenza vaccination and be free of communicable diseases
  • Must complete assigned training including Food Handlers certification within specified time from hire
  • Must be available to work shift coverage including evenings, weekends, holidays or special situations
  • Must be U.S. citizen, national or owe allegiance to the U.S.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must be registered for Selective Service
  • Must be able to provide REAL ID or authorized identity documents for installation access
  • Must satisfactorily complete employment verification (E-Verify) and suitability/fitness determinations
  • Direct deposit required

Job Qualifications

  • Experience in and knowledge of methods and procedures relating to food preparation, portioning and presentation gained in a grill, snack bar, restaurant, club or similar food activity
  • Skill in organizing work assignments to meet strict meal schedules
  • Ability to read and understand menu cards and special dietary requirements
  • Experience in general sanitation principles to properly store food to safeguard against spoilage and waste
  • Ability to read, speak, and write English
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work safely, and perform simple arithmetic
  • Knowledge of operating and cleaning food service equipment, characteristics of various foods, and the ability to season food and identify when foods are done

Job Duties

  • Maintain kitchen and kitchen equipment compliance with health and sanitation regulations including cleaning appliances, counters, sinks, walls, and floors
  • Break down food service carts and dispose of waste and non-storable food items after each meal
  • Wash dishes, silverware, cooking utensils, glasses and pans using both manual methods and automatic dishwasher/sanitizer
  • Use proper methods for refrigerators and other large appliances according to schedules and sanitation protocols
  • Assist Cook and Cook Supervisor with food preparation including peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, or breading
  • Weigh, measure and assemble ingredients for regular and special dietary menu items
  • Prepare uncooked food items regularly
  • Portion foods according to USDA Food Program and cover, date, and store leftovers properly
  • Place cooked food in serving dishes and set up food service trays for delivery to rooms
  • Deliver and retrieve food for family-style dining service including special dietary requirements
  • Ensure kitchens are adequately stocked with necessary food and equipment
  • Inform supervisor if ingredients are unavailable for menu items
  • Prepare baby formula in compliance with USDA requirements for children ages 6 weeks to 11 months
  • Receive and inventory food deliveries
  • Inspect food quality and freshness before receiving/preparation
  • Perform cooking tasks under direct supervision in absense of Cook
  • Follow posted USDA approved menus and standardized recipes
  • Ensure compliance with USDA Food Program, base Public Health, Safety and DoD Food Health & Safety standards
  • Perform continual standing, walking, frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending
  • Frequently lift or move objects up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally more with assistance
  • Work in kitchen environments with high temperatures, humidity, noise and hazards such as hot liquids and sharp blades
