Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Suitable for federal employment based on background investigation
  • Passed drug screening
  • Selective service registration for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Completion of online onboarding and pre-employment identification requirements
  • Willingness to serve a 1-year probationary period
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, lifting up to 20 pounds unassisted, and occasionally over 40 pounds with assistance
  • Compliance with vaccination and mask-wearing policies as per Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Completion of application documentation by the specified deadline

Job Qualifications

  • Evidence of training or experience demonstrating ability to perform food service duties
  • Knowledge of food preparation, modified diets, and nutrition services
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes and sanitary techniques
  • Dexterity and safety in handling kitchen tools and equipment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong work practices and attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills to interact with patients and staff

Job Duties

  • Sets up and breaks down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items
  • Portions food items into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and specified dishware
  • Decides what food items to serve for common diets when diet card or tray ticket specifies the diet type
  • Provides patients with basic information about modified diets and available nutrition services
  • Identifies discrepancies between prescribed diets and designated menu items
  • Follows directions assembling, measuring, weighing, or mixing ingredients for formulas and supplemental feedings using standardized recipes and sanitary techniques
  • Delivers meal trays to patients' bedsides and reports patient comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian
  • Assists cooks in food preparation including assembling, labeling, and arranging completed recipe items for cook use
  • Prepares fresh fruit, cold salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, cold sandwiches, and simple cold desserts along with nourishments and supplement foods and beverages for patients
  • Makes final checks of diet trays prepared by lower grade workers ensuring completeness and correct food temperatures
  • Works across kitchen functional areas including food preparation, dish and pot washing, dry and refrigerated storage, receiving, and serving line
  • Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout food service and related areas
  • Performs other duties as assigned
