Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Suitability for federal employment as determined by background investigation
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination
  • Selective Services registration for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Completion of online onboarding process and presentation of acceptable identification
  • Completion of all application requirements
  • Commitment to 1-year probationary period
  • Ability to continuously stand and walk
  • Ability to frequently stoop, reach, push, pull, and bend
  • Ability to frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Willingness to perform heavy cleaning duties
  • Ability to work shifts as assigned including variable hours, weekends, and holidays
  • No education substitution allowed

Job Qualifications

  • Evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties of the position
  • Experience performing food preparation duties in a healthcare facility, hotel, college cafeteria, military base, or similar quantity food service institution
  • Knowledge of regular and modified diets
  • Ability to read and understand diet cards
  • Understanding of food terminology, measurements, and serving information in standardized recipes
  • Ability to perform duties with dexterity and safety
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications other than blueprint reading
  • Experience with materials and technical practices relevant to food service
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
  • Capability to work without more than normal supervision
  • Knowledge of good work practices

Job Duties

  • Sets up and breaks down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items
  • Portions food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and specified dishware
  • Selects and places correct items on patient trays
  • Decides what food items to serve for the most common diets
  • Identifies obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated by the menu
  • Sets up dining room tables for service, place food and beverages on tables, and replenish items as necessary
  • Delivers meal trays to the patients' bedsides, reporting the patients' comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian
  • Provides assistance to cooks in the food preparation area, such as weigh, measure and assemble ingredients according to standardized recipes
  • Prepares fresh fruit/cold salads/dressings/sandwich fillings and cold sandwiches and simple cold desserts
  • Reads and interprets regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, tray tickets or patient selections
  • Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas
  • Performing other duties as assigned
