Job Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship
- Suitable for federal employment determined by background investigation
- Compliance with drug screening prior to appointment
- Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959
- Completion of online onboarding process with acceptable identification

- Willingness to serve a 1-year probationary period
- Ability to perform physical tasks including light, moderate and heavy work
- Availability to work variable shifts between 5:00am and 7:00pm including weekends and holidays
- Ability to stand and walk continuously and frequently stoop, reach, push, pull, bend
- Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and over 40 pounds with assistance
- No telework or remote work
- Agreement to participate in seasonal influenza vaccination program or wear face mask if exempt
- Ability to provide documentation required for federal employment process
- Commitment to upholding the public interest during probationary period

- Ability to follow established procedures and work sequences
- Ability to operate kitchen equipment
- Ability to handle physical effort such as standing, walking, bending, lifting

- Ability to use computerized systems for recording and retrieving data
- Knowledge of dietary restrictions and menu compliance
- Experience in food preparation and sanitation
- Ability to communicate basic information about modified diets and nutrition services
- Ability to work collaboratively with cooks and other kitchen staff
- Commitment to public service and adhering to rules and regulations
Job Duties
- Set up assigned station on the tray line with correct supplies and food items
- Break down and clean the station when assigned
- Return soiled trays and dishes to the dish room
- Deliver meal trays to patients' bedsides and report patients' comments and complaints to supervisor or dietitian
- Prepare beverages according to the number of servings required
- Prepare fresh fruit, cold salads, dressings, sandwich fillings and cold sandwiches and simple cold desserts in specified quantities
- Sort, wash, peel and cut cold foods using knives or other equipment
- Provide assistance to cooks in food preparation area such as weigh, measure and assemble ingredients according to standardized recipes
- Prepare uncooked food items such as sandwich spread and salad dressings
- Operate, break down and clean equipment assigned to food service and related areas
- Portion food items into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and specified dishware
- Prepare boxed/to go meals
- Verify that food items on tray are appropriate for prescribed diet
- Identify obvious discrepancies between prescribed diets and food items designated by the menu
- Decide what food items to serve for common diets when diet card or tray ticket identifies only kind of diet
- Distribute menus and surveys to patients
- Provide patients with basic information about modified diets and nutrition services available
- Prepare individual and bulk nourishments and supplemental foods and beverages for patients
- Follow directions in assembling, measuring, weighing, or mixing ingredients for basic formulas and supplemental feedings following standardized recipes and sanitary techniques
- Determine quantities of ingredients needed to prepare required yield
- Take nourishment inventories, stocking using first in-first out procedures, replacing expired items
- Label and distribute individual nourishments
- Sterilize equipment and sanitize work areas
- Work in one or more functional areas of kitchen such as food preparation, dish and pot washing, dry and refrigerated storage and receiving, and serving line
- Perform heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout food service and related areas
- Separate food waste and trash from dishes, glasses and silverware in dish washing area
- Unload food/tray delivery carts
- Store sanitized dishes, glasses and silverware
- Scrape, soak, scour, and scrub cookware and utensils
- Move garbage cans when collecting and transferring trash from work area to disposal area
- Provide assistance to cooks in food preparation including assembling, labeling and arranging completed recipe items for use by cooks
- Use a computer terminal to record and retrieve recipe, menu and inventory data and to produce reports
- Other duties as assigned to meet needs of Medical Center
