Job Description

The Child and Youth Program (CYP) Food Service Worker position is a vital role within the Department of Navy's child development and care services. This role is based primarily in a Child Development Center (CDC), with occasional responsibilities supporting the School Age Care (SAC) Program. CYP is committed to providing healthy, nutritious meals to children and youth, supporting their growth and well-being while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and sanitation. Job Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must successfully complete all background checks including fingerprinting, Tier 1 Child Care check, and State Criminal History Repository check
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and provide evidence of immunization
  • Must be free of communicable diseases and maintain appropriate immunizations
  • Must pass E-Verify employment verification
  • Ability to sustain considerable physical activity including walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 40 pounds
  • Must successfully obtain and maintain required security clearance
  • Must complete required training certificates and maintain certifications according to Federal, State, or national accreditation standards
  • Must comply with Federal regulations including Executive Order 12564 and DoDI 1402.05 background check and drug-free workplace policies

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge and understanding of food handling techniques, personal hygiene standards, and safe work procedures
  • Knowledge of techniques for measuring ingredients and basic understanding of recipe construction
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic to count number of servings
  • Working knowledge of diet principles
  • Working knowledge of sanitation standards and procedures to prevent contamination
  • Skill to perform tasks involving several procedures
  • Skill to evaluate final food products and initiate corrective actions
  • Skill to develop standardized recipes for quantity cooking and modify recipes as needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills

Job Duties

  • Assist in food preparation such as peeling, cutting, sorting, washing vegetables and fruits
  • Assemble sandwiches and measure and weigh ingredients
  • Stock food service carts with utensils, plates, bowls, food and beverages
  • Wrap, arrange, and package items for serving to children and youth
  • Transport food from kitchen to classrooms or activity areas
  • Return carts, dishes, and leftover food to kitchen and dispose of food waste and trash
  • Pre-rinse and wash pots, pans, dishes, glasses and silverware according to sanitation regulations
  • Clean serving carts, food preparation areas, cupboards, drawers, and dishwashing areas
  • Set up and operate mechanical dishwasher
  • Remove and clean inspection doors, strainer pans, screens, and spray arms
  • Scrape, soak, scour, and scrub heavy cooking utensils
  • Perform heavy-duty cleaning tasks including ceilings, exhaust hoods, spaces under and behind equipment, floors and walls, walk-in refrigerators and freezers, and sanitize garbage room
  • Maintain clean and orderly work area adhering to NAVMED P5010 and local policies
  • Operate, break down and clean food preparation equipment
  • Store sanitized dishes and silverware
  • Label and date all items in refrigerators and freezers and store leftovers according to health standards
  • Store canned, boxed, and frozen items in food storage area
  • Unload food and supplies from delivery trucks
  • Move heavy garbage cans to disposal area
  • Comply with security, fire and sanitation rules, policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with USDA CACFP standards
  • Serve as mandatory reporter to family advocacy and child protective services for suspected child abuse
  • Perform other duties as assigned
