Job Requirements

  • one year of experience as a cook with Columbus City Schools or comparable experience elsewhere
  • possession of valid Level II State of Ohio Food Protection Certification
  • attach certification before application submission
  • possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required
  • provide a complete list of relevant work experience on application
  • official transcripts or degree required for educational credit
  • valid picture ID required to take exam
  • complete all phases of testing process to receive a final score

Job Qualifications

  • one year of experience as a cook with Columbus City Schools or comparable experience elsewhere
  • possession of valid Level II State of Ohio Food Protection Certification
  • valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required for some positions
  • considerable knowledge of large-scale food service management
  • considerable knowledge of food safety practices
  • considerable knowledge of cooking weights and measures
  • general knowledge of food values and nutrition
  • considerable knowledge of food service routines and standards
  • some knowledge of perishable food inventory management
  • ability to perform mathematics related to kitchen storeroom records, cafeteria receipts, and cooking weights and measures
  • ability to teach quantity cooking to others
  • ability to supervise the work of others
  • ability to maintain records and prepare reports
  • ability to operate a computer and related software
  • ability to communicate effectively with children, school officials, and working associates

Job Duties

  • review menus with supervisor and make minor substitutions to fit the needs of the school
  • communicate with principal regarding cafeteria operation schedules and menus and investigate complaints from students, parents, or other sources
  • assign work to cooks and food service helpers and inspect work in progress to ensure production timeliness and conformance to cooking and sanitation standards
  • assist in performance of work as required and plan and prepare for next day production needs on a daily basis
  • oversee the work of student assistants
  • supervise personnel including completing performance appraisals, recommending discipline, communicating absences to administration, and requesting substitutes when needed
  • record meals for federal reimbursement
  • teach quantity cooking and equipment use
  • order food supplies and paper products, receive order deliveries, ensure accurate on-hand inventory, and make adjustments to menu based on inventory
  • maintain records of cafeteria receipts and expenditures
  • ensure registers are operating and have cash on hand for student purchases, prepare bank deposits for excess cash, and ensure student PINs are available
  • oversee storage of perishable and non-perishable goods to prevent waste or contamination
  • check temperatures and operation of kitchen equipment and submit maintenance requests if needed
  • prepare daily production sheets, accounting records, teacher labor reports, or other reports as required
  • maintain records for free and reduced price meals
  • complete training on a regular basis for food safety, child safety, work practices, supervisor practices, first aid, or other related topics
