Job Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of relevant experience or high school diploma with six years of relevant experience
  • At least one year of experience involving community work or related activities
  • Ability to manage and oversee food service operations in a secure detention or congregate care environment
  • Strong leadership and personnel management skills
  • Ability to maintain compliance with NYC DOHMH, OCFS, and New York State Child Nutrition standards
  • Proficiency in inventory management and staff scheduling
  • Good communication skills to liaise with vendors, staff, and facility leadership
  • Commitment to maintaining sanitary food service conditions
  • Must meet residency requirements as mandated by the City of New York
  • Authorization to work with child-caring responsibilities including background checks

Job Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to the duties described above
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community-centered activities in an area related to the duties described above
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to the above criteria with at least one year of relevant experience
  • Experience in managing food service operations
  • Knowledge of NYC Food Standards and relevant regulatory requirements
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate kitchen and food service staff
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience planning and coordinating food services for large groups or institutional settings

Job Duties

  • Oversee and manage day to day operations of the Food and Nutrition Services Unit in the juvenile detention and congregate care facilities
  • Manage food service and contracted staff in the preparation, presentation, distribution, and serving of all meals and snacks with a focus on balancing nutrition standards with creative and tasty meal plans
  • Coordinate and plan with various staff for community and special events involving youth
  • Prepare work schedules, assign duties, and confirm staffing coverage and adherence to schedules to ensure that meals are provided timely
  • Report on staffing, inventory, equipment maintenance, and compliance as requested
  • Direct staff in ordering, receiving, managing and maintaining inventory
  • Maintain documentation, records, and reports to ensure that the minimum regulatory requirements are met for oversight agencies (e.g. NYC DOHMH, OCFS, New York State Child Nutrition)
  • Ensure acceptable meal production for all assigned sites
  • Maintain records of staff training requirements, certificates, and other required documents
  • Manage time and leave and evaluating staff performance in accordance with Agency policies
  • Communicate with vendors to plan for and resolve issues related to ordering and deliveries
  • Train new kitchen staff in departmental policies and procedures
  • Supervise the inspection, maintenance, and sanitation of the kitchen and food conveying equipment
  • Establish controls to ensure that the rules and regulations set by the department and the institution are adhered to by the food service staff
  • Develop new policies and procedures for the Program Services, Food Service Unit, while managing and evaluating existing policies
