Job Requirements

  • Five or more years of experience in food service managerial role
  • Three or more years of experience managing teams larger than 10 staff
  • Experience leading teams in both front and back-of-house food services
  • Sound knowledge of labor laws and health and safety regulations
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos
  • Effective communication in oral or written form to staff
  • Ability to present information effectively in one-to-one and small group situations
  • Math ability with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using US currency and measurements
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving few concrete variables
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Email, website, and time clock software
  • Proficiency in recipe management, inventory control, and scaling software
  • Maintain and update ServSafe certification
  • Ability to solve problems in a timely manner
  • Ability to manage difficult or emotional customer situations
  • Respond promptly to customer needs

Job Duties

  • Uphold all co-op policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Work with management to develop a strategic vision for the department
  • Translate strategic vision into regular operations and projects with direct reports
  • Provide guidance and oversight for food service, kitchen, and bakery teams to ensure alignment with the co-op’s strategic vision
  • Evaluate the performance of initiatives and respond to results and market changes
  • Produce customer experience that is competitive and engaging
  • Develop and maintain beautiful, clean, and full displays of merchandise
  • Ensure attractive and accurate signage throughout the department
  • Ensure compliance with weights and measures, food safety, and security laws and regulations
  • Oversee equipment cleanliness and preventative maintenance programs
  • Ensure high quality and consistency of all food service products
  • Create and develop high-quality menu items for the deli and buffet
  • Ensure effective procurement and production procedures
  • Oversee and audit inventories of product, tools, and equipment
  • Stay abreast of new products and technology within the industry
  • Complete administrative responsibilities promptly and accurately
  • Plan, audit, and update department programs including an attractive catering program
  • Set departmental goals with the Store Manager and motivate teams to achieve them
  • Design and monitor effective training programs for all positions
  • Ensure regular and timely staff evaluations
  • Discipline employees according to co-op policies
  • Model supportive and participatory leadership qualities
  • Treat staff with consistency and fairness
  • Establish annual departmental budgets including sales, gross margin, labor cost, and net profit
  • Monitor labor and margin ranges
  • Monitor direct and indirect expenses
  • Understand financial reports and terms in grocery retail management systems
  • Lead department inventory counts and storewide cleaning
  • Attend meetings and events as requested
  • Ensure equipment repair and maintenance
  • Maintain knowledge of duties of direct reports
  • Adhere to department dress code
  • Demonstrate support for cooperative values daily
  • Compile information and contribute to reports
  • Perform other duties and work in other departments as assigned
  • Know and uphold co-op manager general responsibilities daily
