Job Description

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is seeking dedicated professionals for multiple Food Service Journey positions at the Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) located in Mackenzie Point, Alaska. GCCC is a minimum to medium custody correctional facility that houses up to 1500 inmates and employs over 350 staff members. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in food service or culinary arts
  • Ability to work in a correctional institution environment
  • Compliance with Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards
  • Must pass criminal history background check and fingerprinting
  • Legal right to work in the United States
  • Ability to obtain Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) security clearance
  • Physical ability to perform job duties including standing for extended periods
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules including 4/10 shifts
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse populations

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of food service, including preparing and serving food for consumption
  • Interpersonal skills showing understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, and politeness to others
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships including with difficult or distressed individuals
  • Ability to express information orally and in writing clearly and effectively
  • Experience working in institutional or correctional food service settings preferred
  • Ability to manage and supervise others in a culinary environment

Job Duties

  • Monitoring of inmate kitchen workers in all areas and job duties including preparation, cooking, baking, serving, safely storing and cleaning in the kitchen, refrigerated storage and dining hall
  • Oversight of the production of meals for up to 1500 inmates 3 times daily ensuring a variety of diets are accommodated including regular, vegetarian, low cholesterol or fat, diabetic, allergy, and other medically prescribed diets
  • Oversee the preparation and production of all bakery items and breads and pastries using in-house ingredients
  • Coordinate catering and food services for special functions such as inmate club banquets, educational ceremonies, and administrative luncheons
  • Ensure the kitchen is kept clean and organized with all appliances, utensils, trays and equipment accounted for, washed, dried and stored properly
