Job Requirements
- ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to approximately 5 hours) in a fast-paced operational environment
- frequent bending, reaching, lifting light materials (clipboards, tablets, testing tools), and navigating confined back-of-house spaces
- regular exposure to temperature extremes (freezers, hot kitchens), wet or slippery floors, cleaning chemicals, high noise levels, and high-traffic areas
Job Qualifications
- degree or diploma in Public Health, Environmental Health, Occupational Health & Safety, or related discipline preferred
- experience in food safety, workplace safety, compliance auditing, or regulatory inspection environments
- valid Food Handler Certification required
- HACCP certification strongly preferred
- prior experience in hospitality, institutional food service, or high-volume food operations is an asset
- working knowledge of Ontario Food Premises Regulation (O. Reg. 493/17)
- working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act
- working knowledge of WSIB injury reporting and documentation standards
- working knowledge of Toronto Public Health inspection frameworks
Job Duties
- conduct routine and ad-hoc food safety and occupational health and safety inspections across all food service, storage, production, and operational areas
- verify compliance with Ontario Food Premises Regulation (O. Reg. 493/17), Occupational Health and Safety Act, WSIB requirements, and Toronto Public Health standards
- identify, document, and classify hazards, non-conformances, and unsafe practices
- exercise the authority to immediately escalate and recommend suspension of unsafe food handling or work practices that pose an imminent risk
- ensure critical findings are communicated to operational leadership in real time
- participate in food safety, injury, illness, and near-miss investigations, including root-cause analysis
- track corrective-action implementation and verify effectiveness through follow-up inspections
- prepare and maintain inspection, investigation, and corrective-action documentation required for internal audits and regulatory reviews
- support Toronto Public Health, MLITSD, and WSIB inspections, including document production and follow-up actions
- deliver and document targeted food safety and workplace safety training sessions, including onboarding refreshers, seasonal campaigns, and retraining following non-compliance
- compile inspection metrics, trends, and risk summaries
- produce actionable reports identifying systemic risks, recurring deficiencies, and training gaps for management review
- collaborate with department leaders and the Food, Health and Safety Manager to strengthen compliance frameworks and continuous improvement initiatives
- complete additional duties and special projects assigned in support of the overall safety program
