Job Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • willingness to work 24-hour continuous shifts and be subject to recall during emergencies
  • possession of a valid California Class C driver's license at time of application
  • possession of a current CPAT card issued within one year prior to recruitment open date
  • successful completion of National Registry Paramedic Exam by Fire Academy start
  • possession of a valid California Paramedic License by Fire Academy graduation
  • ability to obtain and maintain current ACLS, PALS, CPR certificates
  • ability to obtain Hazardous Materials First Responder, Confined Space Awareness, S-130, and S-190 certifications by probation completion
  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • willingness to undergo background and pre-employment physical examinations
  • willingness to submit to pre-employment drug tests and random testing per Department of Transportation regulations
  • internal candidate status required with a minimum of 600 paid hours worked for the City within the previous twelve months

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license
  • current CPAT card issued within one year prior to recruitment open date
  • proof of passing the National Registry Paramedic Exam by the start of Fire Academy
  • possession and maintenance of a valid California Paramedic License by Fire Academy graduation
  • current ACLS, PALS, and CPR certificates or local agency equivalents
  • firefighter endorsement for California Class C or higher driver's license
  • Hazardous Materials First Responder certification by probation completion
  • Confined Space Awareness certification by probation completion
  • S-130 and S-190 certifications by probation completion
  • knowledge of basic mathematics, mechanical principles, human anatomy, and emergency medical services delivery
  • ability to learn technical firefighting concepts, procedures, and equipment operation
  • ability to assess situations quickly and work effectively as a team member
  • strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • ability to maintain physical health, strength, and agility to meet the demands of firefighting work

Job Duties

  • Responds to calls for fires, medical emergencies, rescues, fire alarms, hazardous materials, and other calls for service as needed
  • drives and operates department vehicles as needed
  • applies extinguishing agents to fires using hoses, nozzles, hydrants, pumps, hand tools, and other firefighting equipment
  • enters burning structures to affect rescues and extinguish fires using ladders, hand tools, protective breathing apparatus, and power tools
  • performs rescues and removes people from hazardous conditions such as burning buildings, cliffs, and bodies of water
  • conducts technical rescue and extrication using rope, hydraulic tools, ladders, and other specialized equipment
  • performs salvage and overhauling operations at fire scenes
  • administers Basic or Advanced Life Support (BLS/ALS) to ill or injured persons
  • participates in fire department training programs and maintains required skill levels
  • assists in training as assigned
  • performs fire prevention activities and conducts public education classes
  • participates in pre-fire planning by inspecting and drawing floor plans of buildings
  • cleans, repairs, and maintains fire apparatus and equipment
  • writes Patient Care Records (PCR) and other reports as assigned
  • maintains station, quarters, and grounds
  • receives radio and telephone calls and refers as necessary
  • may respond to emergencies during non-duty hours
  • performs other related duties as required
