Job Requirements
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with a high school education
- ability to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position
- possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Dakota
- possession of or ability to obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II, and EMT-B certifications within one year of employment
- ability to complete the medical and physical criteria as specified in the department’s Health and Fitness policy
Job Qualifications
- Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and apparatus
- knowledge of National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and International Code Council (ICC) standards
- knowledge of incident command principles and practices
- knowledge of emergency medical principles and practices
- knowledge of local, state, and federal fire codes and departmental rules and regulations
- skill in decision making and problem solving under routine and emergency conditions
- skill in operation and use of fire equipment and apparatus
- skill in public and interpersonal relations
- skill in oral and written communication
Job Duties
- Responds to emergency assignments as dispatched in order to perform fire suppression, EMS response, hazardous materials response, rescue, and other emergency response activities
- provides emergency medical care including CPR, assisted respirations, external defibrillation, patient immobilization, bleeding control
- lifts, carries, and moves patients
- operates a variety of equipment as assigned including fire pump, aerial ladder, generators
- performs a variety of public education and fire safety activities including station tours and fire prevention education
- performs inspections of buildings and businesses to ensure compliance with the fire code
- maintains equipment and performs required inspections and general maintenance
- coordinates fire prevention activities including scheduling classes and ordering materials
- prepares and delivers educational materials
- performs a variety of regular and special reports
- completes required training and maintains required certification
- performs related duties
