Job Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Valid California Class C Driver License
  • Submission of all required certificates including EMT or Paramedic license and CPR card at time of application
  • Successful completion of pre-employment medical examination including vision and drug testing
  • Ability to pass a written test based on provided study guide
  • Compliance with background checks, fingerprinting, and potential polygraph examination
  • Ability to meet San Diego Fire-Rescue Department vision standards including corrected 20/20 visual acuity

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate or Paramedic License from the State of California or approved agency
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) card at Healthcare Provider/BLS level or higher
  • Ability to pass comprehensive medical and vision examinations
  • United States citizenship or legal eligibility to work in the United States

Job Duties

  • Attend the Fire Academy to complete physical exercises and classroom lectures
  • Perform manipulative training drills including fire suppression, vehicle extrication, and hazardous materials handling
  • Learn and comply with California State Fire Training Firefighter 1 standards including structural, hazardous materials, and wildland firefighting
  • Pass all training and certification requirements to be promoted to Fire Fighter I
  • Respond to fire emergencies and conduct fire prevention activities
  • Maintain physical fitness and readiness through regular training
  • Comply with department policies and safety procedures
