Job Description

Powhatan and Goochland County are jointly hiring a Farmers Market Manager to oversee all operations related to the weekly and specialty markets held in both counties. These counties have a rich tradition of supporting local agriculture and community events, and this role plays a critical part in continuing and enhancing these efforts. The Farmers Market Manager will report to the Parks and Recreation Directors of both Powhatan and Goochland counties, working closely with various stakeholders including vendors, sponsors, nonprofits, and entertainers to provide an inviting and successful market experience for guests and the community at large.

Job Requirements

Reliable, consistent attendance
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
Ability to be onsite and accessible during market hours
Skilled in managing vendors and conflict resolution
Ability to maintain records and prepare financial reports
Must report to Parks and Recreation Director
Ability to manage SNAP-EBT and coordinate nutrition education programs
Knowledge of applicable laws and policies
Ability to plan and supervise vendors, part-time workers, and volunteers
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Job Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent
Experience in farmers market management or related fields
Knowledge of marketing, community outreach, fundraising, and event planning
Skilled in public relations and customer service
Proficient in Microsoft 365 and Canva
Ability to manage time effectively and work independently
Strong written and oral communication skills
Ability to supervise part-time, seasonal staff, volunteers, and youth
Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to market operations
Familiarity with social media platforms
Ability to prepare reports and handle financial transactions

Job Duties

Manage all vendor applications, communication, scheduling, farm inspections, and reports
Recruit and select vendors, activities, and entertainment
Process vendor registration and contracts, invoices, and payments
Register applicants and collect registration/license fees and program donations, receipt money, maintain records, prepare financial reports
Be onsite and accessible to vendors and patrons on market days and during market hours
Ensure vendors comply with all market rules
Relay vendor contact information to Virginia Department of Agriculture, Virginia Department of Health, etc. to ensure vendor compliance with laws
Create monthly calendars, flyers, signage, and manage social media content to communicate with vendors and advertise market information, programs, and events
Develop and manage partnerships with community organizations
Plan specialty event markets and coordinate with other County departments
Secure sponsorships for the market and manage marketing and branding
Establish and manage the SNAP-EBT program and coordinate with Virginia Cooperative Extension nutrition education programs
Create annual market budget with Director of Parks and Recreation
Oversee facility and grounds for safety conditions
Enforce park regulations during market events
Respond to public inquiries about scheduled events
Request law enforcement assistance as needed
Provide excellent customer service
Operate specialized computer software for recreation management
Record attendance and compile reports on market events and programs
Manage purchasing and payments for market supplies and equipment
Perform related duties as assigned
