The Carolina Classic Fair is one of the largest and most beloved events in North Carolina, held annually at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. Drawing over 250,000 visitors each October, the fair has become a significant cultural and community event that celebrates agricultural education, thrilling rides, world-class entertainment, and a diverse selection of traditional fair food. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in event management or related field
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Ability to manage complex budgets and contracts
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of local and state regulations for public events
  • Availability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends during the fair
  • Valid driver's license

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in event management, business administration, hospitality, or a related field
  • Proven experience in event management, preferably with fairs or large public events
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent negotiation and contract management abilities
  • Experience in marketing, promotions, and public relations
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with community stakeholders and public agencies
  • Strong financial management and budgeting skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with industry organizations such as IAFE, NCAOAF, and NICA

Job Duties

  • Lead all aspects of fair operations including budgeting, contracts, programming, and long-term strategic planning
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Fairgrounds, including staff management, event coordination, facility maintenance, and budget management for non-fair events, purchase orders, and capital improvements
  • Negotiate and administer contracts with entertainers, carnival operators, concessionaires, sponsors, and other vendors
  • Direct and oversee marketing and promotional efforts to maximize attendance, community impact, and brand awareness for the Fair
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement, Fire, EMS, and Emergency Management to ensure public safety during all events
  • Ensure compliance with state and local regulations, including safety standards set by the NC Department of Labor and city/state authorities
  • Hire, train, and evaluate both permanent and seasonal staff
  • Foster a culture of professional development and excellent customer service
  • Serve as the face of the Fair, representing the event in media interviews, with civic groups, industry associations, and at community events
  • Collaborate with organizations such as International Association of Fairs and Expos (IAFE), North Carolina Association of Agricultural Fairs (NCAOAF), and National Independent Concessionaires Association (NICA) to stay ahead of industry trends and best practices
  • Manage the Fairgrounds Farmers Market, ensuring its growth and alignment with the mission of the Fairgrounds as a year-round community destination
