Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in an applicable discipline
  • at least eight years of experience managing a similar facility or equivalent education and experience
  • advanced knowledge of management and staff leadership principles
  • extensive knowledge of public assembly facility management including fiscal control, policy development, marketing, and event management
  • ability to follow directions and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision
  • excellent teamwork and communication skills
  • ability to foster a positive work environment and contribute collaboratively
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • experience in contract negotiation and budget oversight
  • leadership experience with supervisory responsibilities

Job Duties

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with contract administrators, city departments, economic alliances, facility clients, community stakeholders, live event industry decision makers, labor unions, and civic organizations
  • provide cohesive and positive leadership and direction to all departments and staff
  • aggressively promote venue usage with agents, promoters, and the community to maximize annual events
  • negotiate lease agreements with meeting planners, third-party organizations, event organizers, and promoters
  • serve as fiscal oversight officer for all business units including budget development, financial systems overview, projections, controls, and personnel management
  • provide oversight and administration for operating units ensuring safe, clean, and properly maintained properties
  • oversee Cedar Rapids Tourism Office efforts to attract conventions and sporting tournaments through marketing and coordinated services
  • seek community involvement opportunities including public speaking and media appearances
  • monitor contract compliance and negotiate necessary agreements
  • approve all contracts with licensees, vendors, and suppliers
  • complete annual reporting and communicate achievements
  • develop and maintain relationships with artist agents, management, and promoters and oversee programming for concerts, tournaments, conventions, and events
  • provide guidance on marketing and ticket operations to maximize sales
  • maximize revenues related to sponsorships, grants, donations, naming rights, and vendor trade
  • manage in-house food and beverage operations including catering and concessions
  • recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff
  • plan and coordinate all venue maintenance and operations activities
  • conduct performance appraisals and recommend salary/bonus adjustments
  • lead consistent staff and leadership meetings
  • administer execution of operating budgets
  • advise on staffing plans including employee types, salaries, and benefits
  • create a positive working environment
  • greet public and clients courteously and direct appropriately
  • maintain daily oversight of operations and events across business units
  • ensure efficient operations including capital projects
  • conduct operations in compliance with regulations
  • oversee staff compliance with safety and insurance policies
  • maintain emergency preparedness
  • manage corporate-directed plans for human resources, sales, marketing, and operational efficiency
