Job Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in business management, marketing, architecture, civil engineering, construction management, landscape architecture, project management, or a closely related field
  • Minimum of four years of experience in managing events, projects, programs, construction, construction inspection, design, landscape design, geotechnical, environmental or a closely related field
  • Valid Texas Class C driver’s license
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Must be able to lift moderately heavy items up to 40 pounds
  • Compliance with the City of Houston’s driving policy
  • Willingness to perform multiple tasks and manage several projects simultaneously
  • Availability to work in outdoor weather conditions
  • Eligibility for random drug testing as this position is safety impact
  • Successful completion of any required skills assessments
  • Directly related professional experience may substitute education requirement on a year-for-year basis

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business management, marketing, architecture, civil engineering, construction management, landscape architecture, project management, or related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience managing events, projects, programs, construction, design, or related field

  • Proven experience planning, coordinating, and delivering events on time and within budget
  • Strong background in project management including scheduling, budgeting, risk management, and vendor coordination
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, clients, and external partners
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience negotiating and managing vendor contracts and service agreements
  • Proficiency with project management tools and event planning software
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with on-site event execution, logistics, and post-event evaluation

Job Duties

  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of the Mayor’s Civic Celebration Program to promote the arts
  • Serve as operations and production assistant for major events including setup, execution, and load-out
  • Conduct comprehensive event planning and on-site evaluations ensuring safety and compliance
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend creative event components and production elements
  • Coordinate operational activities including schedules, budgets, risk mitigation, and vendor relationships
  • Collaborate with city departments, stakeholders, community partners, and external vendors to ensure successful execution
  • Review permit applications, determine fees, collect fees, and issue permits according to policies
  • Work with private event producers to maintain compliance and accurate scheduling and reporting
  • Assist in development of computerized systems for event tracking
  • Prepare and maintain detailed work plans and checklists for events
  • Negotiate and manage vendor contracts and support on-site logistics and post-event evaluation
  • Support social media programs related to special events and community engagement
  • Collaborate with graphic designers on marketing materials for events
  • Assist in developing policies related to special events in compliance with City Code
  • Represent the Director as a liaison to other city departments and organizations
  • Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required for event support
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously using project management software
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Drive on City business as required
