Job Requirements
- Two years of experience involving skilled operation of refuse or heavy construction equipment
- Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent
- Possession of valid Class B CDL or ability to obtain Class B CDL
- Ability to obtain Class A CDL within six months of hire
- Ability to maintain vehicle insurability
- Willingness to obtain forklift certification within six months
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods
- Willingness to work 24/7 on-call schedule
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 80 pounds
- Willingness to follow safety procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Willingness to participate in training
- Ability to respond to emergency situations
- Maintain clean driving record
Job Qualifications
- Two years of experience operating refuse or heavy construction and maintenance equipment
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade
- Possession of a Class B CDL and ability to obtain Class A CDL within six months
- Ability to maintain insurability
- Forklift certification or ability to obtain within six months
- Preferred certifications include flagger training, confined space entry, work zone safety, FEMA training, first aid, jet rodder, lift truck instructor, trenching, and AED
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 80 pounds and working outdoors for extended hours
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Job Duties
- Perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment such as compressors, cement mixers, skip loaders, knuckle boom, and bucket trucks
- Participate in required training and practice all safety rules and procedures
- Repair and maintain City owned properties including parks, cemeteries, streets, roads, alleyways, and drainage systems
- Collect, haul, and dispose of municipal solid waste, recycling materials, and yard debris
- Perform grounds maintenance, concrete work, asphalt spreading, jack-hammering, excavation of drainage ditches, and back-fill jobs
- Maintain equipment logs, perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and basic preventative maintenance
- Install street barricades and cones and direct traffic around work sites
- Communicate effectively using radios, digital phones, and onboard devices
- Respond to emergencies and weather events utilizing snow removal and spreading equipment
- Respond courteously to public inquiries and resolve complaints
