Job Requirements

  • High school graduate
  • Must obtain and maintain Enhanced E-911 certificate within 1-2 months
  • Must obtain and maintain APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 certificate within 1-2 months
  • Must obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Dispatch/Pre arrival Instruction Certificate within 1-2 months
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR certification
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Ability to interact with all personnel levels
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize workload
  • Computer proficiency
  • Knowledge of hospital and interdepartmental functions

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate
  • Current Enhanced E-911 certificate from the Massachusetts Statewide Emergency Telecommunications board
  • Current APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 certificate
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch/Pre arrival Instruction Certificate from the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch
  • CPR certification
  • Exceptional customer service skills including strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to interact with all levels of personnel from physician to patient
  • Ability to function independently and prioritize workload under stress
  • Computer proficiency
  • Thorough knowledge of hospital and interdepartmental functions
  • Preferred: Massachusetts certified EMT-Basic
  • Preferred: 1 year emergency medical dispatch experience
  • Preferred: APCO PST 1, EMD and State 9-11 certifications

Job Duties

  • Receives E-911 calls and verifies caller information
  • Provides emergency medical dispatch instruction to callers
  • Dispatches the closest appropriate emergency ambulance
  • Coordinates first responders such as police and fire departments
  • Dispatches emergency helicopters and coordinates landing zones
  • Gathers patient information and develops flight plans
  • Maintains call logs and enters data into dispatch programs
  • Notifies receiving agencies of patient information and arrival times
  • Pagers appropriate trauma teams for incoming patients
  • Assists with ground ambulance and Life Flight staff coverage when requested
