Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • one year EMS dispatching or hospital transfer center coordination experience or two years Patient Access Services Specialist or similar administrative experience in a complex hospital or outpatient environment
  • ability to work under high stress and in rapidly changing environments
  • excellent customer service skills
  • ability to type at least 45 wpm
  • proficient with multi-line phones and radio communication devices
  • knowledge of medical terminology
  • effective verbal communication skills
  • availability to work shifts including weekends, holidays, and scheduled or unscheduled overtime

Job Qualifications

  • One year EMS dispatching, hospital transfer center coordination or hospital bed placement coordination experience
  • demonstrated ability to work in a high stress, high acuity setting
  • adept at adapting to rapidly changing environments
  • skillful in directing and controlling multiple critical communication events simultaneously
  • excellent customer service skills
  • strong database skills
  • typing speed of 45 wpm
  • proficient with multi-line phones and radio communications
  • knowledge of medical terminology
  • effective verbal communication abilities
  • some college education preferred
  • formal EMS dispatcher training preferred
  • experience with emergency radio communications preferred
  • prior database experience preferred

Job Duties

  • Coordinates complex transfers of acutely ill patients to OHSU/DCH from outside hospitals
  • collects accurate patient information and initiates EPIC intake
  • conducts initial triage for possible transfer and pages appropriate OHSU physicians
  • connects referring providers to OHSU providers on recorded telephone or telemedicine link
  • scribes key information during calls and activates specialty teams
  • collaborates with bed flow manager, physician on duty, transfer center RN, and patient placement to secure bed placement for transfer patients
  • dispatches Pediatric and Neonatal Doernbecher Ambulance team (PANDA) at physician discretion
  • communicates with air and ground transport vendors to secure transportation and tracks PANDA team throughout transport
  • activates emergency protocols and secures assistance for PANDA team when required
  • answers and triages incoming calls to OHSU/DCH ED
  • facilitates page requests and manages emergency team activations on behalf of ED staff
  • answers stat lines and gathers accurate information quickly, including POLST Registry and Rapid Response Team lines
  • answers OHSU, Trauma, MRH, and MCI radio channels and phone lines
  • documents ambulance reports and disseminates patient information to relevant clinical teams
  • activates specialty teams as required
  • serves as Regional Hospital during mass casualty incidents (MCI), disseminating information and managing patient distribution
  • activates and manages Divert on OCS to evenly distribute ambulance traffic during ED divert status
