Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • education equivalent to high school diploma
  • preferred six months EMT experience
  • preferred completion of State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Academy or equivalent
  • valid California Class C Driver License
  • current DMV Driving report
  • valid EMT-I certification as defined by State of California EMS Authority
  • must be accredited as EMT-I in San Diego County by appointment time
  • valid CPR certificate minimum healthcare provider
  • nonsmoker status required
  • no federal or state felony convictions
  • residency within Department boundary within one year of appointment
  • residency in local counties of San Diego, Riverside, Orange, or Los Angeles

  • California vehicular laws
  • basic understanding of fire-based EMS delivery systems
  • geography and street layout of San Marcos and surrounding areas

Job Duties

  • Operates ambulances safely
  • transports patients in accordance with Department Policies and San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Protocols
  • responds to emergency medical services calls and alarms involving fire, accidents, hazardous materials, and rescue work
  • performs EMS skills including BLS assessment and emergency medical treatment
  • administers CPR, emergency bandaging, and splinting
  • prepares written reports and maintains medical information confidentially
  • participates in quality assurance and improvement programs
  • cleans and maintains fire stations and equipment
  • inspects and maintains fire hydrants
  • participates in drills and department training
  • studies and updates knowledge of City geography, rules, procedures
  • prepares pre-fire plans and special response maps
  • presents public relations programs and demonstrates techniques
  • regularly operates paramedic ambulance and related equipment
  • occasionally operates rescue and fire suppression tools
  • performs related duties as required
