Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Two years of progressively responsible experience as a public safety dispatcher within the last five years
- Ability to obtain or recertify VCIN Operator certification within six months of hire
- Pass online skills and psychological tests
- Pass comprehensive medical examination including drug screening and vision test if new to the airport authority
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and be available for emergency holdover or recall
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively under pressure
- Attendance at mandatory and specialized training
- Background security investigation clearance
- Work under fast-paced stressful conditions with multiple calls and communications
Job Qualifications
- Two years of progressively responsible experience as a public safety dispatcher within the last five years
- Ability to obtain or recertify VCIN Operator certification within six months of hire
- Ability to read and interpret maps
- Knowledge of dispatch policies, procedures, and mutual aid protocols
- Knowledge of VCIN and NCIC procedures
- Skill in the use of public safety communications equipment
- Problem-solving skills to process and organize relevant information
- Computer proficiency with CAD systems, public safety databases, two-way radio and 9-1-1 phone systems
- Ability to pass skills, psychological, and medical examinations
- Effective English communication skills both spoken and written
- Completion of the 80-hour Commonwealth of Virginia Telecommunication course
Job Duties
- Receive and create calls for service, both emergency and non-emergency, and enter them into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
- Communicate with first responders via radio, telephone, and email
- Dispatch police, fire, and EMS units according to the nature of service requested
- Maintain constant contact with dispatched units and relay information verbally
- Coordinate mutual aid responses with participating jurisdictions
- Perform administrative tasks including preparing logs and retrieving data from law enforcement databases
- Monitor Airports Authority security systems and respond to Level One alarms
