Job Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent
  • One year of experience in radio-teletype operations, sworn law enforcement, dispatching, forestry, firefighting or other public contact work
  • College education from an accredited institution can substitute for experience at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for the required experience
  • Possession of a valid driver license
  • Must live within 30 miles of the headquarters in Davie, Florida throughout employment
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts and remain or be called to duty beyond assigned schedule
  • Must pass numerically based work sample test
  • Occasional to moderate travel required
  • Ability to respond to emergencies including natural disasters
  • Must comply with drug-free workplace policies and anti-discrimination laws

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of experience in radio-teletype operations, sworn law enforcement, dispatching, forestry, firefighting or other public contact work
  • College education may substitute for experience at specified rates
  • Valid driver license
  • Ability to operate communication equipment
  • Proficient in using maps and various software programs
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills
  • Good knowledge of local geography and landmarks

Job Duties

  • Dispatch crews to wildfires, smoke complaints and other incidents
  • Operate computer, radio and telephone systems to transmit, receive and store information
  • Approve or deny issuance of burn authorizations and update maps accordingly
  • Maintain landowner and certified burner contact information and advise on burning laws
  • Coordinate assistance with other agencies and cooperators for wildfire suppression
  • Maintain paper and electronic records, reports and files related to communications center
  • Receive and handle incoming calls and relay information to appropriate parties
  • Gather and relay daily fire weather information and reports any unusual weather activity
  • Complete all training requirements for the Duty Officer position within designated time
