Job Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school, vocational school, or equivalent
  • Completion of ninety semester hours from accredited college or Associate Degree
  • Eight years of piloting experience with multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft over 12,500 pounds and 2000 hours turbine time
  • Valid Texas Driver License
  • Possession of required FAA certifications (Certified Flight Instructor multi-engine, Commercial Pilot, Instrument Pilot)
  • Current and maintain FAA second-class medical certificate
  • Meet semi-annual Physical Readiness Testing standards
  • Ability to assimilate TXDPS, State and Federal regulations and policies
  • Ability to remain calm and display leadership in emergencies
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be organized and able to prioritize in a changing environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software
  • Must handle confidential information appropriately
  • Availability for after-hours, weekend work, frequent overnight and occasional weeklong travel
  • Subject to 24/7 on-call status
  • Ability to perform physical requirements including standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, hand-eye coordination, and ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Extensive driving as required

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent with ninety semester hours from accredited college or Associate Degree
  • Eight years of experience piloting multi-engine fixed-wing aircraft with over 2000 hours of turbine time
  • Prior law enforcement experience preferred
  • Valid Texas Driver License
  • Federal Aviation Administration certifications including Certified Flight Instructor in Multi-Engine, Commercial Pilot Certificate, or Instrument Pilot Certificate
  • Current FAA second-class medical certificate
  • Working knowledge of Texas DPS and FAA regulations
  • Ability to react calmly in emergencies and work effectively with diverse teams
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly
  • Availability for frequent travel and after-hours work

Job Duties

  • Operate DPS aircraft in a safe and professional manner
  • Evaluate general safety of aircraft and ensure maintenance and repairs
  • Obtain weather information and prepare flight plans
  • Inspect aircraft and perform safety checks before flights
  • Pilot aircraft for search and rescue and criminal investigation support
  • Participate in surveillance and undercover operations
  • Transport prisoners, suspects, law enforcement personnel, officials, and medical patients
  • Provide aerial reconnaissance, transport emergency supplies, and support motorcade security
  • Assist in traffic and criminal investigations
  • Maintain and submit required records
  • Attend work regularly and perform other assigned duties
